DEMOnstration exercise for Integrated Ecosystem Assessment and Advice of Baltic Sea fish stocks
Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management in Europe is still waiting to be implemented. The reason is mainly a lack of a coherent strategy to include the wider ecosystem context.
The goal of this project is to develop and evaluate an integrated advice for the three main commercial fish stocks in the Baltic Sea, i.e. cod, herring and sprat. We want to demonstrate ways towards the inclusion of multi-species interactions, environmental conditions, bio-economic considerations and projections of the Baltic Sea future into an ecosystem-based fish stock advice and management.
The approach that we will follow is based on efforts of the "ICES/HELCOM Working Group on Integrated Assessments of the Baltic Sea" (WGIAB) and summarized by Möllmann et al (2013).
