"Anthropocene – An important scientifc, social and economic challenge for our society"

The Anthropocene could be a new geological era after the Holocene in which we humans are a key driving force in our planet.
We are changing the face of our planet in many different ways, including the composition of the atmosphere, our land and the radiation balance. Science do not fully understand yet these large changes in our planet and its consequences. Temperature increases of 2 to 6 degrees will have important impacts on the ecosystems and our socioeconomic structure. The Paris agreement is a good start in reducing emissions, but we need to do much more, requiring new science to address these challenges. The social and economic implications of climate change are also huge, and we still have to structure a governance system to deal with this new geological era.

Speaker: Professor Paulo Artaxo, University of São Paulo
Date: Tuesday 18 October, 2016, 13.00–14.00
Place: De Geer room, Geoscience Building
