This seminar will give an overview of MISU’s contribution to the MOCCHA (Microbiology-Ocean-Cloud-Coupling in the High Arctic) campaign during the expedition Arctic Ocean 2018 with the Swedish Icebreaker Oden.

About the project:

During summer in the High Arctic (August), melting sea ice and sunlight increase the activity of marine microbiology (algae, bacteria) in the uppermost part of the ocean. This generates organic aerosol particles that are released from the sea surface microlayer (SML) to the atmosphere.

As climate change leads to less Arctic sea ice, it may cause more organic aerosols from the SML. If these aerosols are potent cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), this will yield low-level clouds with smaller droplets and higher albedo (reflectivity) compared to a more ice-covered ocean and less CCN.

More reflective low-level clouds at the end of summer could have a net cooling effect in the surface energy budget, which would lower sea surface temperature (SST) and counteract ice melt in the High Arctic.
