Ice Sheet Models and their Numerical Discretization

Abstract
Ice sheets are important components of our climate system. To predict future ice mass loss, one must model how ice is moving from the cold interior towards the coasts, where it melts or breaks into ice bergs.

Both the mathematical models and the discretization methods underlying ice sheet models are changing. Early ice sheet models employed finite differences discretization of approximative models such as the Shallow Ice and Shallow Shelf Approximation. Nowadays finite element discretizations of higher order accuracy models are becoming increasingly popular.

In this talk we describe the basics of finite element discretization of the p-Stokes equations for computing ice dynamics, and discuss advantages as well as computational challenges.
