Improved understanding of global cloud radiative effects in the recent satellite era

by Abhay Devasthale, SMHI

Time: 17 December 2019, 11h15–12h15
Venue: C609 Rossbysalen, Arrhenius laboratory, Svante Arrhenius väg 16C, 6th floor

Abstract
This seminar summarizes the progress made in our understanding of cloud radiative effects (CREs) based on satellite observations in the recent decade. Starting from describing the global and regional seasonal aspects of CREs, the sensitivity of CREs to cloud macro- and microphysical properties is further discussed, both at the surface and the top of the atmosphere. The importance of the vertical structure of clouds in driving their net radiative effect is described. Finally, few challenges in studying CREs from satellite observations that demand attention in future are outlined.
