Jannik Martens, Örjan Gustafsson
This dataset contains terrestrial organic carbon (terrOC) mass accumulation rates in surface sediments of the seven circum-Arctic shelf seas, observational data on relative terrOC release using the integrated carbon remobilization index (I-CRI), terrOC and marine OC source fractions in circum-Arctic shelf sediments, a data collection of mass accumulation rates in surface sediments using ²¹⁰Pb-xs, as well as ¹³C and ¹⁴C data of terrOC source compartments in the circum-Arctic drainage basin.
The dataset has been used to quantify the contribution of terrOC from different sources to circum-Arctic shelf sediments using dual-isotope (¹³C and ¹⁴C) source apportionment and ²¹⁰Pb-xs mass accumulation rates. This work uses spatially-distributed data on ¹³C, ¹⁴C and total OC from the Circum-Arctic Sediment Carbon Database — CASCADE.

Data description
The dataset contains supplementary information to the Martens et al. (2022) study.
The file martens-ea-2022-SI-tables.xlsx
contains seven data tables, with content as detailed below:
- Supplementary Table 1: Calculated accumulation (mean ± s.d.) of OC fractions per shelf sea in Tg yr⁻¹
- Supplementary Table 2: Terrestrial OC stocks in the circum-Arctic drainage basin (in Pg)
- Supplementary Table 3: Results of the Integrated Carbon Release Index (I-CRI) for the circum-Arctic shelf seas
- Supplementary Table 4: End members for the dual-isotope mixing model to calculate OC source fractions
- Supplementary Table 5: Results of the dual-isotope source apportionment
- Supplementary Table 6: Collection of sediment mass accumulation rates (MAR) from the circum-Arctic shelves
- Supplementary Table 7: Radiochronological data for sediment core slices from the ESAS and the Kara Sea
The file martens-ea-2022-SI-data-1-end-member-database.xlsx
contains a large collection of ¹³C and ¹⁴C data of terrOC end member compartments (i.e. surface soil, soil and peat, deep peat, Ice Complex Deposits and marine OC) across the circum-Arctic drainage basin.
Comments
The data presented in this dataset are also included in the supplementary information to the Martens et al. (2022) paper, but not in the form of separate Excel files as made available here. Please, cite the article by Martens et al. (2022) when using this dataset.
This work uses spatially-distributed data on ¹³C, ¹⁴C and total OC from The Circum-Arctic Sediment Carbon Database — CASCADE, version 2.
Matlab script for the dual-isotope source apportionment is available in the Bolin Centre Code Repository.
