Erik Schytt Mannerfelt
Glacier outline polygons of Mårmaglaciären and Mårmapakteglaciären from 1959, 1978, 1991, 2008, 2016 and 2021.
The glaciers are located in the Mårma massif, in northern Sweden, approximately 25 kilometres to the northwest from the Tarfala Research Station, which is Stockholm University’s centre for glaciological and alpine research.
The outlines are used to derive areal extent change and geodetic mass balance estimates from the two glaciers. The outlines are drawn from high-resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and orthomosaics with sub-metre accuracies.

Data description
The dataset consists of two files containing polygons of the two glaciers in the Mårma massif, and one similarly structured file for nearby snow pathches, for dates listed below. An image file is also provided that illustrates the polygons.
Filenames and content
Marma_glacier_outlines_1959-2021.geojson
: Outlines of Mårmaglaciären.
Marmapakte_glacier_outlines_1959-2021.geojson
: Outlines of Mårmapakteglaciären.
Snowpatches_1959-2021.geojson
: Outlines of large patches of snow outside of the glacier extents.
marma_outlines_map.jpg
: Image file that illustrates the data.
All polygons are in a GeoJSON
file format, readable by a multitude of tools like QGIS, ArcGIS, GeoPandas or any tool that can read JSON files. The image is a JPEG raster data file.
Dates for the polygons
- 1959-09-23
- 1978-07-21
- 1991-07-31
- 2008-09-10
- 2016-09-17

The outlines have been drawn from Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), available as a separate dataset by Schytt Mannerfelt (2022), based on aerial images and airborne laser scanning.
