This dataset provides measurements of the diffusive flux of methane (CH₄), a strong climate forcing trace gas, to the atmosphere from three subarctic lakes located on the Stordalen Mire in northern Sweden.
We measured turbulence-driven diffusive fluxes of CH₄ with floating chambers during the ice-free seasons of 2010 to 2017, approximately every 1 – 2 weeks, from different locations in the lakes. The lakes are small (surface area 0.010 – 0.17 km²) and shallow (max. depth 1.3 – 6.7 m), and are structural features of the landscape (i.e. non-thermokarst). The chambers were deployed for 24 hours to integrate diel changes in the surface concentration and gas transfer velocity, during which the chamber headspace was sampled 2 – 4 times. Gas concentrations were measured on a gas chromatograph. A flux was computed from the rate increase of CH₄ in the chamber headspace. Paired measurements of key environmental variables (temperature and wind speed) are also provided. This is a unique dataset in both its spatiotemporal resolution and length.
The measurements have been used to assess the environmental drivers of CH₄ emissions from lakes to the atmosphere, and how emissions might change under continued Arctic warming.
