This dataset consists of geochemistry data (stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes; organic matter and carbon accumulation rates), measured on a 494 cm long splice sediment record (core EL18-SH01-03) from the Gamlebyviken estuary, Swedish east coast (Baltic Sea).
The sediment was collected in August 2018 at a water depth of 55 m and covers approximately 3000 years.
Stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes serve as proxies for anthropogenic impact and marine/terrestrial influence. We utilized δ13COM as a proxy for determining organic matter origin and δ15NOM as an indicator of nitrogen source. Carbon accumulation rate (CAR) data are used to investigate the sediments’ ability to serve as a carbon sink and its potential to mitigate climate change.

Data description
The dataset contains stable carbon (δ13C-OM)
and nitrogen (δ15N-OM)
isotopes; organic matter (OM)
and carbon accumulation rate (CAR)
data from the sediment core EL18-SH01-03, Gamlebyviken estuary. Stable isotope data from 67 stratigraphic levels cover the age span 2018 CE – 3125 cal yr BP. OM and CAR data from 87 stratigraphic levels cover the age span 2018 CE – 3091 cal yr BP. An age model was constructed using radiocarbon dates, lead-210 and cesium-137. Both sediment depth (cm below sea floor) and ages (cal yr BP) are provided.
The name of the core EL18-SH01-03 combines a reference to the research vessel (Electra av Askö), the sampling year (2018), the expedition (sampling expedition 1 from Södertörn University) and the site (site 3).
The data is provided as an .xlsx
file containing two sheets, the first containing data on stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes the second containing data on organic matter (OM) percentages and organic carbon accumulation rates (CAR). These sheets are also provided as individual .tsv
files. The sheets and corresponding .tsv
files contain the following data:
-
