Clare Marie Flynn
This dataset contains the subset of output from simulations performed with the ICON general circulation model in aquaplanet configuration with r2b4 horizontal resolution (approximately 160 km) with varying turbulent drag used to investigate the impact of drag on the tropical atmosphere.
All latitudes are included in the output, and output selection includes both 2D and 3D variables, such as precipitation, air temperature, vertical velocity, zonal and meridional velocity, 2D cloud fraction, and radiative fluxes at the top of atmosphere and surface.
The output fields are hemispheric-, zonal-, and time-mean averages, and so represent a climatology for each simulation. Example ICON run scripts are also included, to show how the control simulations are set up and how the turbulent drag parameter that controls the magnitude of the turbulent drag in ICON is varied easily with the namelist within the run script.

Data description
Python save file format (.npz)
The data files are in the Python save file format (.npz), to save storage space and for ease of use. The content can be viewed and read in with common Python commands such as np.load.
2D variables such as precipitation are stored in files marked 2d and 3D variables such air temperature are stored in files marked 3d. One 2d and one 3d file for each simulation, marked control for control runs and stressfac for the varying turbulent drag values simulation.
Python run scripts (.py)
Example bash and Python scripts that show how the simulation output is transformed from ICON's triangular grid to a regular lat-lon grid, and the output is selected and then averaged to obtain these .npz files are also included, executed in the usual way at the command line or in a Python GUI. This shows how the control simulations are set up and how the turbulent drag parameter that controls the magnitude of the turbulent drag in ICON is varied easily with the namelist within the run script.
File size
Each .npz file is about 1 MB for 2d variables and 12 MB for 3d variables. Total file size (one zip folder with 327 npz, 6 py, 2 sh and 3 run files) for download: 3.2 GB.
Comments
The dataset was created for, and analysed in, a study by Flynn and Mauritsen (2022). The focus of analysis was the tropics.
The article by Giorgetta et al. (2018) is a reference paper for the ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic (ICON) atmosphere general circulation model.
