Measurements of the mole fraction of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in a gas stream equilibrated with surface ocean water, and the fugacity derived from it, were obtained from a Pro-Oceanus CO2 ProCV membrane equilibration sensor sampling from the pumped underway line of the Swedish icebreaker Oden during the expedition SAS (Synoptic Arctic Survey) covering a large area including parts of Amundsen Basin, Nansen Basin, the North Pole, Lomonosov Ridge, Morris Jesup Rise and the Yermak Plateau.
The underway line draws water from approximately 8 m depth and measurements ran continuously during the expedition from August 2 to September 11 2021.
Data include fugacity of CO₂ determined at the in situ temperature and salinity of the surrounding water at 8 m depth, the CO₂ mole fraction, and the temperature and salinity measurements. Data have been quality controlled to remove calibration measurements and periods when the underway intake flow was affected by sea ice.

Data description
This dataset includes two files:
Oden_Aug2021_Sep2021.txt
- Columnar time series of the data, with column headings giving variables and units. Variables include date and time (UTC), SST, salinity and CO₂ fugacity.
Metadata-for-SOCAT_Oden_August_September_2021.xlsx
- Metadata file following SOCAT conventions and describing the variables, units and instrumentation.
Comments
The data are included as a component of the analysis of CO₂ flux measurements in the central Arctic presented in Prytherch et al. (2024).
In addition, the data is stored on the SOCAT v2024 database (Bakker et al. 2024) and forms part of the gridded product. The dataset is also accessible in gridded and non-gridded forms along with supporting metadata through the SOCAT interactive data set viewer. The dataset EXPOCODE identifier is 77DN20210802.
The expedition
The data were collected in summer 2021 from Swedish icebreaker Oden during the Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS) 2021 expedition organized by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat.
