This dataset includes peat properties as well as elemental data and standardized absorbance values of spectra collected in the mid infrared (wavenumber 4000 – 400 cm⁻¹) region using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy - Attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) of the inorganic fraction from Store Mosse Dune South (SMDS) peat sequence. In addition we present FTIR-ATR data from bulk and size fractionated local source sediments.
The aim of this research was to reconstruct past changes in storminess as inferred using the observed mineralogy in the peat sequence. The fractionation of a given mineral into a certain size fraction was established using the local source sediments.
Store Mosse is a well-studied bog located in south central Sweden and this particular peat sequence, collected in 2017 from the central bog complex, dates back to ca 5000 cal yr BP. The local source sediments (n=30) were sampled both within and around the bog in order to get a representative picture of potential inputs to the SMDS sequence.

Data description
The dataset is provided in three xlsx
spreadsheet files:
Peat sequence data
Includes data for the Store Mosse Dune South (SMDS) peat sequence in terms of bulk density and peat accumulation rates (Peat Properties
worksheet), the sample ages (Age Model
worksheet), ash content after combustion at 500 °C (Ash Content
worksheet) as well as elemental variations from XRF core scanning (XRF-CS
worksheet).
Peat ash data
Includes the measured FTIR-ATR spectral data for the range of 4000 to 400 cm⁻¹ for the Store Mosse Dune South (SMDS) peat ash.
Source sediment data
Includes the measured FTIR-ATR spectral data for the range of 4000 to 400 cm⁻¹ for local source sediments to the Store Mosse Dune South (SMDS) peat sequence. There are two main sets of samples. The AS samples which come from the area to the west of the peat bog and SMT which comes from transects across the dune system in the bog and from sites to the north of the bog. All bulk samples were measured (Bulk
worksheet). The SMT samples were divided into two coarse size fractions (> 125 and 63 – 126 microns) while the AS samples were on sieved to >63 microns (Coarse
worksheet). There was not enough material for measurements to be made on the medium fraction of the SMT samples so only As samples were measured for the 38 – 63 micron fraction (Medium
worksheet). All samples were also measured for the fine fraction (< 38 micron) (Fine
worksheet).
