Sediment properties, carbon dioxide and oxygen fluxes from Siberian Arctic Ocean sediments collected in 2020

This dataset contains observational data on sediment properties and gas fluxes (carbon dioxide and oxygen) for 16 surface sediment samples from the Laptev Sea, Kara Sea and East Siberian Sea sampled during the ISSS-2020 expedition.

This dataset entails a) sediment properties including: lignin phenol and n-alkane biomarkers, carbon and nitrogen concentrations, stable and radioactive carbon isotope composition of sediment organic carbon, isotopic carbon source apportionment fractions and grain size distribution, b) aerobic carbon dioxide and oxygen fluxes and sediment oxygen uptake and c) data on statistical analyses.

This data was generated with the purpose of investigating the influence of sediment properties on sediment carbon dioxide emissions and oxygen consumption.

This dataset is divided into five comma separated value (csv) files.
Character set: Western Europe (Windows-1252/WinLatin 1).

1. sauerland-site-and-sediment-properties.csv Sediment properties of 16 surface sediment samples including:
   • lignin phenol and n-alkane biomarkers
   • carbon and nitrogen concentrations
   • stable and radioactive carbon isotope composition of sediment organic carbon
   • isotopic carbon source apportionment fractions
   • grain size distribution and bulk density
   • site information including:
   • station ID, coordinates, sampling date, sample type, water depth and bottom water salinity.
2. sauerland-co2-and-o2-fluxes-replicate-values.csv Carbon dioxide and oxygen flux rate values for individual laboratory replicates of aerobic sediment slurry incubations.
3. sauerland-mean-co2-and-o2-fluxes.csv Mean carbon dioxide and oxygen flux rate values from aerobic slurry incubations and associated respiratory quotients and sediment oxygen consumption values from shipboard sediment core incubations.
