Jenny K. Sjöström
This dataset contains chemical, mineral and isotopic concentration data of a radiocarbon dated peat sequence from Davidsmosse bog, in Halland province, southwestern Sweden. It also contains chemical, mineral and grain size content of local soils and sediments.
The data was collected with the purpose to reconstruct peat paleodust deposition and accumulation rates. Within this study local mineral sources (soils and sediments) was characterised, to explore potential source areas of minerals deposited to the bog.

Data description
The dataset contains six semicolon-separated values (csv) files, with the following content:
Geochemical data
The file davidsmosse-geochem.csv
contains the geochemical data of the peat sequence organised in 18 columns and 127 rows.
Columns 1 – 5:
- Mean age (calendar years before present)
- depth (cm)
- bulk density (Bd, g m⁻²)
- peat accumulation rate (PAR, g m⁻² yr⁻¹).
- Ash accumulation rate (AAR, g m⁻² yr⁻¹)
Columns 6 – 18 contain mass accumulation rates (concentration × PAR), as measured by WD-XRF, of the following elements (units in each column header):
- Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Fe, Br, Sr
Each row represents one analysed sample, organised in ascending order (youngest sample at top, oldest at bottom).
The file halland-soil-wd-xrf.csv
contains the chemical composition of size fractionated soil and sediment samples. In total 7 samples were retrieved (30 cm from surface) and each sample was thereafter fractionated into six size fractions (< 38 μm, 38-63 μm, 63-125 μm, 125-250 μm, 250-500 μm and >500 μm) prior to analysis. The weight of each size fractions were also recorded. The file contains 18 columns and 45 rows. The last four rows contain the min, max, mean and 2σ values for samples in columns 5 – 18.
Columns 1 – 4:
- Sample id (Sample id, soil type code)
- Size fraction, µm
- Wt, % (weight percentage of the fraction against the total)
- LOI, % (mass loss after ignition (550°C)
Columns 5 – 16:
- Si (%), Al (%), Fe (%), K (%), Na (%), Ca (%), Mg (%), Ti (‰), P (‰), Zr (‰), Cl (‰), Br (‰)
Columns 17 – 18:
- Si/Ti (ratio between Si and Ti)
- Si/Al (ratio between Si and Al)
Soil type codes key: 1 = glaciofluvial sediment, 2 = till, 3 = aeolian dune.

Age depth model data
The file davidsmosse-age-depth-model.csv
contains the result of the age depth modelling (see Sjöström et al. 2022 for details), based on six radiocarbon dated samples throughout the peat sequence. The file contains 6 columns and 489 rows.
Columns:
- depth, cm (vertical location of sample, cm from surface)
- min (minimum calibrated years before present, cal yr BP)
- max (maximum cal yr BP)
- median (median cal yr BP)
- mean (mean cal yr BP)
- acc rate, cm yr⁻¹ (accumulation rate, years per cm, i.e. how long time it took for 1 cm of peat to accumulate).
Carbon, nitrogen and stable isotopes
The file davidsmosse-ash-C-N-d13C.csv
contains the results of analysis of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and stable isotopes of carbon (δ¹³C) measured in bulk peats samples. The file contains 10 columns and 97 rows.
Columns:
- Age, cal BP (mean age, calender years before present)
- Depth, cm (vertical depth from surface, cm)
- PAR, g m⁻² yr⁻¹ (peat accumulation rate)
- Ash, % (inorganic residue left after ignition at 550°C)
- δ13Ctot vs PDB, ‰ (δ¹³C values, ‰, relative to V-PDB)
- C, % (percent carbon content)
- C, g m⁻² yr⁻¹ (carbon accumulation rate, C% × PAR)
- N, % (percent nitrogen content)
- N, g m⁻² yr⁻¹ (nitrogen accumulation rate, N% x PAR)
- C/N ratio (ratio between C and N values).
XRD, peat samples
The file davidsmosse-peat-xrd.csv
contains the results (diffractograms) of XRD analysis of ashed, down-core, peat samples from the Davidsmosse peat sequence. The file contains 17 columns and 3891 rows. The first column (Angle, 2Theta) contains information about the location of measured diffraction. The remaining columns (2 – 17) contain the diffraction results of individual, analysed, samples. The sample headers contain contain information about sample id (see Sjöström et al. 2022 for further information).
XRD, soil samples
The file halland-soil-xrd.csv
contains the results (diffractograms) of XRD analysis of sediment samples from Halland province. The file contains 25 columns and 3891 rows. The first column (Angle, 2Theta) contains information about the location of measured diffraction. The remaining columns (2 – 25) contain the diffraction results of individual, analysed, samples. The sample headers contain contain information about sample id, and size fraction (see Sjöström et al. 2022 for further information).
Comments
The dataset is used and discussed in the article by Sjöström et al. (2022), which is based on the PhD thesis by Jenny Sjöström (2021).
Davidsmosse (56° 59’ 10” N, 13° 00’ 32” E, 170 ha, 143 m a.s.l.) is located 30 km from the west coast in the eastern part of the Halland province, south-western Sweden.
