Sapwood biomass carbon in northern boreal and temperate forests
Martin Thurner
We have estimated the amount of carbon stored in the living tissue of tree stems (sapwood), based on satellite remote sensing observations during the year 2010 and biomass allometry measurements. The resulting dataset of stem sapwood biomass per area covers the entire northern hemisphere boreal and temperate forests at a spatial resolution of 0.01° (roughly 1 km). Such information is useful for carbon and water cycle applications. Since sapwood biomass is a state variable estimated by many global vegetation models, our product can serve as a benchmark to evaluate such models.
Note that this is an outdated revision of the dataset and there is an
updated version.

Conditions for use: 1) The dataset has to be requested from the principal investigator (Martin Thurner: martin.thurner@aces.su.se). Please give a brief description of the intended use of the dataset. You will then receive access to a download link as soon as possible. 2) The principal investigator should be notified when the dataset is used in any publication or derivative work. 3) Full citation to the corresponding publication (Thurner et al., accepted in Global Ecology and Biogeography) should be provided when using the dataset. 4) One year after the date of publication of this metadata, the dataset will be available for direct download from the Bolin Centre Database, without the condition that a request must be sent to the principal investigator.
The principal investigagor, Martin Thurner, is from January 2019 at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F), Senckenberganlage 25, D-60325 Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
