Data from a modelling study to investigate North Atlantic sea surface temperature at the Eocene-Oligocene Transition
David Hutchinson, Agatha de Boer
This dataset accompanies a study that investigates the evolution of North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) across the Eocene-Oligocene Transition (EOT) about 34 million years ago. The associated study is foremost a paleoclimate SST proxy study, but has a modelling component that investigates the impact of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and Arctic paleogeography on the circulation and SST at the time.
The modelling component consists of four simulations with an EOT paleogeography. The sensitivity experiments have respectively the following defining characteristics: (1) Open Arctic-Atlantic connection with 800 ppm CO₂ concentration, (2) Closed Arctic-Atlantic connection with 800 ppm CO₂ concentration, (3) Open Arctic-Atlantic connection with 400 ppm CO₂ concentration, (4) Closed Arctic-Atlantic connection with 400 ppm CO₂ concentration.

Data description
The data correspond to the four simulations presented in the study by Śliwińska et al. (2022) and are provided in netCDF (.nc
) files.
The dataset contains the following subfolders:
MOC_indices
: Meridional overturning circulation indices, as shown in Figure 5a,b.
N_Atlantic_SST
: Time series of N. Atlantic SST evolution as shown in Figure 5c.
SST_annual
: Annual mean SST shown in Figure 6 and Figure 7.
SST_month
: Monthly mean SST, used to calculate summer SST shown in Figure S4.
streamfunction
: Barotropic streamfunction, as shown in Figure 8
model_proxy_points
: Pointwise version of the nearest model data points to each proxy location.
The data files in each subfolder are named using the following suffixes, corresponding to the four simulation experiments:
arc_cl_400
: Arctic Closed, 400 ppm CO₂
arc_cl_800
: Arctic Closed, 800 ppm CO₂
arc_op_400
: Arctic Open, 400 ppm CO₂
arc_op_800
: Arctic Open, 800 ppm CO₂
The data for the pointwise version of the nearest model data points are presented in one comma-separated values (.csv
) file.
Total file size (compressed): ~7.7 MB.
