Ice-nucleating particle measurements collected during the Arctic Ocean 2018 marine aerosol reference tank experiments

Size segregated samples were collected from the marine aerosol reference tank (MART) headspace using a cascade impactor for offline analysis of their ice-nucleating particle (INP) content using a droplet freezing assay. We report INP concentrations per unit volume of water (where the particles from each impactor stage were suspended in water) and also the normalised INP concentration per unit volume of air, where the INP concentration in the MART headspace was normalised to the average total ambient aerosol particle concentration during the campaign.

These experiments were designed to explore if the bubble bursting in various water bodies is a source of atmospheric INPs in the Arctic.

A marine aerosol reference tank was deployed aboard the Oden icebreaker during the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition during August – September 2018 to study sea spray aerosol (SSA) generated from locally collected surface water.

Data description

There are data for 6 samples here, each with its own csv file. The data appears in Mirrielees et al. and are fully discussed there.

The temperature corresponds to the temperature of a droplet freezing

N_INP,sample (L-1): Number of INP per liter of water sample from the droplet freezing assay.

N_INP,norm (L-1 air) Number of INP per liter of air. These values are normalized to the ambient total aerosol particle concentration over the course of the MOCCHA expedition, based on the size distribution measurements in Karlsson and Zieger (2020).

Each file contains T, N_INP,sample and N_INP,norm for each of the six size categories form the cascade impactor.

The N_INP,sample and N_INP,norm data were consistent with the backgrounds, therefore should be regarded as upper limits.

The Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition also referred to as MOCCHA-ACAS-ICE. This particular dataset was supported by MarineIce, a European Research Council Fellowship held by Ben Murray (648661 MarineIce)
