Data description

Images are taken by a Mobotix MX-M24M IP camera with a wide angle lens providing a 90-degree field of view. The camera is installed on the railings above the bridge, approximately 25 above the surface, and is angled down, capturing a region out from approximately 15-20m from the ship to the horizon. Images are captured every 15 seconds and stored as JPG image files with dimensions of 2048x1536 pixels.

The files are named for the time of image capture DDD-hh-mm-ss.jpg where DDD is day of year (Jan 1 = 1), hh is hour, mm is minutes, and ss is seconds. The camera time is synchronized to the ship's time server. The files are provided as a single ZIP archive containing a directory structure mx1/YYYY-MM-DD with the images for each day. The zip file is approximately 103GB and the unpacked files are approximately 184GB.

Imagery from the starboard side and forward over the bow are provided as separate data sets.

GPS locations and imagery from the starboard side and forward over the bow are provided as separate data sets.

Comments

The imagery provides a quick-look of surface conditions around the ship, and also a means for deriving surface properties. Notably similar data has been used to calculate ice/melt pond/open water fractions around the ship on previous expeditions. See Srivastava et al. (2022) for details of the processing applied to calculate these quantities. The angle subtended by each pixel is approximately 0.0465 degrees (lab calibration).
