Aerosol particle number size distribution data collected during the ARTofMELT expedition, Arctic Ocean, 2023
Julia Kojoj, Paul Zieger
Aerosol particle number size distributions in the size range 15 – 792 nm were measured with a custom built differential mobility particle sizer (DMPS) which uses a mixing condensation particle counter (MCPC; Model 1720 from Brechtel Manufacturing Inc., USA). An additional MCPC 1720 was measuring the total particle number concentration.
Atmospheric aerosol particles affect climate by scattering and absorbing solar radiation and by modifying cloud properties. The particle size distribution is an important parameter that determines for example the atmospheric residence time, the optical properties, and the interaction with atmospheric water (cloud activation).
Measurements were performed on the 4th deck of icebreaker Oden during May and June 2023 along the track of the ARTofMELT expedition.

Data description
The data is provided in a single csv file with 38 columns.
Column 1Time (midpoint of scan) in UTC, format YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss.sssColumn 2Total number concentration (measured by MCPC) in particles per cubic centimeterColumn 3 – 38Number concentration, dN/dlogD per cubic centimeter at bin midpoint diameters (electrical mobility diameter) in meters
Aerosol particle number size distributions in the size range 15 – 792nm, measured with a DMPS at a time resolution of 12 minutes per scan across 36 size bins.
The size distribution data have been corrected for losses due to diffusion, impaction and sedimentation using the Particle Loss Calculator (von der Weiden et al. 2009) assuming spherical particles with a density of 1.5 gcm⁻³ (average density of the particles measured with the sp-ams during the same campaign). Note that periods with the possible influence of ship pollution are included as in this dataset and are not removed.

Project
This work is part of the ARTofMELT (Atmospheric rivers and the onset of Arctic melt) project. The ARTofMELT expedition was supported and organised by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat (SPRS) on the Swedish research icebreaker Oden in spring 2023 under the SWEDARCTIC program. This project has received funding from the European Union''s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101003826 via project CRiceS (Climate Relevant interactions and feedbacks: the key role of sea ice and Snow in the polar and global climate system) and the European Research Council (Consolidator grant INTEGRATE No 865799).
