Underwater vision profiler (UVP6) data from expedition ARTofMELT, Arctic Ocean, 2023 — raw data

Julia Muchowski, Noemie Planat, Lina Aleke Holthusen, Magnus Asmussen

Underwater vision profiler data collected from the Swedish icebreaker Oden during the expedition ARTofMELT (Atmospheric Rivers and the Onset of Arctic Melt) in the Fram Strait pack ice during the spring transition between May and June 2023. This dataset contains raw data.

An Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP6) from Hydroptics was mounted downward-facing on the CTD (oceanographic conductivity, temperature, and depth equipment) of icebreaker Oden and collected images of plankton and small particles in the water column during all CTD casts of the expedition.

Data description

The dataset is provided in two folders accompanied by a logbook file UVP_logbook.csv. Total size ~317 MB.

2023

Contains the actual data, provided in a hierachy of subfolders. At the top level, there are 16 subfolders, each of which has a name in the form mm-dd.

Each subfolder at this level is divided into a variable number of subfolders, each of which has a name in the form yyyymmdd- followed by the time in the format hhmmss.

Each subfolder contains two files that contain metadata and are automatically created when collecting data. They have the following structure of file names:

  • yyyymmdd-hhmmss_data.txt
  • yyyymmdd-hhmmss_synthetic.txt

The raw images taken by the UVP are saved as vig files in subfolders with up to 500 vig files each. Subfolders containing vig files are named with increasing numbers, for each date and time starting with 1 and increasing as needed depending on the amount of files.

The UVPapp can be used to convert vig files to png images. The software can be downloaded at the PIQv website.

configurator

Contains two config files used during the expedition.

  • hwconf_2.txt
  • conf_file2.txt

The hwconf_2.txt file contains configuration parameters for the general setup of the UVP instrument. The conf_file2.txt contains the data acquisition parameters. Its original file name, as outputted by the instrument, was acqconf.
