During the late 1960s and early 1970s, in conjunction with the UNESCO International Hydrological Decade (IHD), studies of the hydrology of the Tarfala Valley catchment were started in earnest. River discharge measurements had been carried out during the 1950s and 1960s, but with the construction of a fixed gauging station called Rännan, true monitoring of hydrology could be initiated.
Hydrological measurements are still carried out at Rännan as well as at an additional upstream station Lillsjön close to the Tarfala research station (TRS). Tarfala constitutes the only gauged alpine catchment in Sweden.
