Digital elevation models of Sálajiegna glacier, northern Sweden, derived from uncrewed aerial vehicle surveys in 2022
Florian Vacek, Clemens Deutsch, Jakob Kuttenkeuler, Nina Kirchner
This dataset provides digital elevation models (DEMs) of the calving front of Sálajiegna glacier, located across the Swedish-Norwegian border in Arctic Sweden.
Sálajiegna has an approximate surface area of 25 km² and ranges in elevation between 869 m and ~1750 m a.s.l. The southern margin of Sálajiegna comprises two separate glacier tongues, of which the western (Norwegian) is land-terminating, whereas the eastern (Swedish) presently terminates in a proglacial lake at 869 m a.s.l. with an over 1 km long calving front.
The DEMs are derived from uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetric surveys of Sálajiegna’s frontal region on different days during the summer of 2022. The high-resolution (~10 cm) DEMs of the calving front allow to detect and quantify frontal changes, including calving events in particular.

Data description
Six DEMs are provided as georeferenced tif files. The reference system is SWEREF99 TM (EPSG:3006), with RH2000 (EPSG:5613) as vertical reference.
The DEMs are named UAV_n_DEM_yyyy_mm_dd.tif where n = 1,...,6 is a counter for the DEM and yyyy_mm_dd denote the year, month and day of data acquisition. UAV denotes the platform from which the survey was conducted, an Uncrewed Aerial vehicle (UAV). Total file size: 3.7 GB.

The first UAV photogrammetric survey of Sálajiegna’s front was carried out on 29 July 2022 with a DJI Mavic 3. Additional five consecutive surveys were flown in September 2022. The UAV surveys were georeferenced with 14 ground control points.
Further information and a detailed description of the data acquisition can be found in Vacek et al. (2024).
