Coastal Yedoma deposits and continental shelf sediments in the Arctic Ocean silicon cycle collected in 2020

This dataset contains measurements on the water column chemistry, rates of dissolved silicon exchange between sediments and the water column, and amorphous silicon content of the surface sediments on the Siberian Arctic Ocean continental shelves (Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea) from September to October 2020.

This dataset tests important gaps in our knowledge of the silicon budget of the Arctic Ocean, providing a baseline for future studies aiming to investigate a changing Arctic and world ocean silicon budget.

Cores were collected and incubated on board RV Keldysh during the ISSS2020 expedition to measure rates of dissolved silicon and oxygen exhcange between sediments and the water column. Surface sediments were analyzed upon return to Stockholm University.

Data description

This dataset consists of a single excel file with two sheets.

si_fluc_data: this sheet includes data regarding sediment core incubations and surface sediment characteristics. Each bullet point below describes the column in the datasheet

• station - the station ID at which the sample was collected
• sea - the sea in which the sample was collected
• latitude - the station latitude (in decimal degrees)
• longitude - the station longitude (in decimal degrees)
• depth_m - the depth to the seafloor where the sediment core was collected (metre)
• temp_c - the temperature of bottom water when the core was collected (°C)
• salinity - the salinity of bottom water when the core was collected
• sio2_flux - the dissolved silicon flux between the sediment and water coulm (μmol m⁻² d⁻¹)
• o2_flux - the dissolved oxygen flux between the sediment and water coulm (μmol m⁻² d⁻¹)
• start_sio2_conc - the dissolved silicon concentration in water overlying sediments at the beginning of the incubation (μmol L⁻¹)
• start_o2_conc - the dissolved oxygen concentration in water overlying sediments at the beginning of the incubation (μmol L⁻¹)
• toc_perc - the percent mass of surface sediment made up of organic carbon
• delta_13_c - the δ13C of surface sediments (‰)
• asi_perc_mass - the percent mass of surface sediments made up of amorphous silicon
• dist_from_river_km - the distance (km) from the location the core was collected to the nearby river

water_column_si: data from water column profiles measured along transects radiating from river outflows

• st - the station id
• lon - the station longitude (in decimal degrees)
• lat - the station latitude (in decimal degrees)
• date - the date the sample was collected
• bottom_depth_m - the depth from the surface at the sampling site (metre)
• sea - the sea in which the sample was collected
• bottle_num - the smple bottle ID
