We have estimated the amount of carbon stored in the living tissue of tree stems (sapwood), based on satellite remote sensing observations during the year 2010 and biomass allometry measurements.
The resulting dataset of stem sapwood biomass per area covers the entire northern hemisphere boreal and temperate forests at a spatial resolution of 0.01° (roughly 1 km). Such information is useful for carbon and water cycle applications.
Since sapwood biomass is a state variable estimated by many global vegetation models, our product can serve as a benchmark to evaluate such models.

Comments
Please, cite the article by Thurner et al. (2019) when the dataset is used. The authors also welcome that contact is taken if the data are used for any research project or publication.
Martin Thurner was affiliated with the Department of Environmental Science and Analytical Chemistry (ACES), Stockholm University, when version 1 of the dataset was released with restricted conditions regarding how to access and use the data.
This version (1.1) of the dataset contains exactly the same data as version 1, but without the restricted conditions.
