Frequent new particle formation over the high Arctic pack ice by enhanced iodine emissions, ancillary data

Andrea Baccarini, Julia Schmale, Josef Dommen, Paul Zieger, Linn Karlsson

Newer versions of this dataset are available

This dataset contains a collection of ancillary data that were used for the publication Frequent new particle formation over the high Arctic pack ice by enhanced iodine emissions (Baccarini et al., 2020, Nature Comm.).

Some of these datasets can be reproduced starting from other datasets from the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition also available at the Bolin Centre Database (e.g., the growth rate). Other data represent standalone datasets that are not available at the Bolin Centre Database because they do not cover the entire campaign but are related to single events (e.g., the residual concentrations on September 6, 2018). Please find details in the Data description section for this dataset.

Measurements were performed on the 4th deck of icebreaker Oden during August and September 2018 along the track of the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition.

Data description

The following data are contained in this dataset:

  • Growthrate_mode_fit: Results of the particle size distribution mode fitting from the growth rate events described in the paper. Columns indicate the datetime, the center of the mode diameter and the standard error associated to the mode fitting procedure. The number of modes changes between different events, here we report values only for the fitted modes during each specific events. Consequently, there are empty cells when the number of modes is less than the maximum.
  • Growthrate_summary: summary of the individual growth events. It contains the start and end time of each event, the growth rate [nm/h], the 95% confidence interval from the fit and the mean diameter during the event.
  • Iodic_Acid_Model: contains the data used for the iodic acid model described in the publication: datetime, iodic acid concentration and the modelled variable called Lsum that corresponds to the iodic acid deposition velocity plus the condensation sink times the boundary layer height.
  • Negative_Ions_17sep18: 30-minute timeseries of the negative ions measured during the new particle formation event on September 17, 2018. For each ion the molecular composition and the concentration are given in counts per second.
  • PeaklistTable_17sep18: contains the peak list of the negative ions during the new particle formation event on September 17, 2018. Lists the mass of all measured ions along with the molecular identification when possible and the relative concentration in milli counts per second.
  • Residuals_concentration_6sep18: Concentration of cloud residual measurements with a condensation particle counter behind a counterflow virtual impactor inlet during the fog event on September 6, 2018.
  • Residuals_sizedistribution_6sep18: Size distribution of cloud residuals measured with a differential mobility particle sizer behind a counterflow virtual impactor inlet during the fog event on September 6, 2018. Concentration is reported as dn/dlogDp in per cubic centimeter.

All datetimes are reported as UTC in the format yyyy-mm-dd HH:MM:SS.

The data creator ORCID are the following:

Data were collected during the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition on board the Swedish icebreaker (I/B) Oden, which was organized by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat. The observations were part of the project ‘Aerosol-cloud interactions in the High Arctic’ (PI Paul Zieger, Department of Environmental Science, Stockholm University; see MOCCHA project website with updates).
