Cloud droplet size distributions and cloud microphysical parameters measured during expedition ARTofMELT, Arctic Ocean, 2023
Lea Haberstock, Paul Zieger, Darrel Baumgardner
This dataset provides droplet number concentration, size distribution (dN/dlogD), effective diameter and liquid water content measured with a Fog Monitor 120 (Droplet Measurement Technologies, USA) during the ARTofMELT campaign 2023.
Measurements of cloud microphysical properties are important to understand the radiative transport, aerosol-cloud interactions, as well as aqueous phase chemistry in the atmosphere. Especially in the Arctic spring measurements are rare.
The data was collected from 7 May to 13 June 2023 on the Swedish Icebreaker Oden in the Fram Strait, Arctic Ocean.

Data description
The data are provided as one csv file with the following variables:
timestampUTC (YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm)[...]30 columns named after the upper bin limit (in m), containing particle number concentration in the different size bins normalized by the log bin width (dN/dlogD)NNumber concentration (cm⁻³)EDEffective diameter (µm)LWCLiquid water content (g m⁻³)
Comments
Data processing
The data has been shifted by 11 hours to align with UTC. The number concentration in each size bin has been calculated using the sample volume flow rate and was normalized by the bin width (in log space).
The data have been averaged (1 min) and loss corrected according to Spiegel et al. (2012). With the loss corrections, number concentration in each bin, as well as total number concentration, liquid water content and effective diameter were re-calculated.
This dataset only provides the processed data and no other parameters usually provided by the Fog Monitor.

The expedition
Data were collected during the ARTofMELT 2023 expedition on board the Swedish icebreaker Oden, which was organized by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat from 8 May through 14 June, 2023.
Project
This work is part of the ARTofMELT (Atmospheric rivers and the onset of Arctic melt) project. The ARTofMELT expedition was supported and organised by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat (SPRS) on the Swedish research icebreaker Oden in spring 2023 under the SWEDARCTIC program. This project has received funding from the European Research Council (Consolidator grant INTEGRATE No. 865799) and from the European Union's Horizon Europe project “CleanCloud” (Grant agreement No. 101137639). Further funding was provided by the Carl Tryggers Foundation (CTS 22:2148).
