ARTofMELT 2023 Expedition Report
Michael Tjernström, Paul Zieger, Work Package Leader team
The ARTofMELT (Atmospheric rivers and the onset of Arctic melt) expedition on the Swedish research icebreaker Oden departed Svalbard around midnight on 8 May 2023 and returned to Svalbard on 14 June 2023. The scientific target for this expedition was – as the name implies – processes that led to the onset of the annual sea ice melt and to explore possible links to so-called “atmospheric rivers”. The latter are spatially and temporally limited distinct inflows of warm and moist air from the south and happen either in association with transient weather systems or with persistent high-pressure blockings.
The aim of the expedition was to observe, measure and document development and relevant processes during late winter and early spring and into the onset of the melt. The measurements were taken in a column from the upper ocean, defined here as the water column down to ~500 m, through the ice and up through the whole troposphere, the lowest ~8-10 km of the atmosphere. Hence, although with an atmospheric focus, the expedition was interdisciplinary with work packages across, on the one hand, oceanography, sea ice and atmosphere and, on the other hand, across meteorology, atmospheric physics and chemistry, cloud physics, sea-ice dynamics, ocean physics and biogeochemistry.
