Surfactants in the sea-surface microlayer and dissolved CH₄ and N₂O from expedition ARTofMELT, Arctic Ocean, 2023

Newer versions of this dataset are available

This dataset contains concentrations of surfactants in the sea-surface microlayer (SML) and the underlying water (ULW = 1m), and concentrations of dissolved methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) at the sea surface and in the water column.

The data were collected to investigate sources and sinks and the influence of sea ice melt on trace gas dynamics and on the characteristics of the SML. From these data, sea-air-fluxes of CH₄ and N₂O can be determined to estimate gas emissions.

Samples of the SML were collected with the glass plate technique, samples at 1 m depth were collected using a Van-Dorn sampler, and water column samples were collected from Niskin bottles at a CTD-rosette.

Data was collected during the ARTofMELT 2023 with Swedish icebreaker Oden in the Fram Strait pack ice during the spring transition (8 May to 14 June) of 2023.

The expedition

Data were collected during the ARTofMELT 2023 expedition on board the Swedish icebreaker Oden, which was organized by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat from 8 May through 14 June, 2023.

Data creators' roles

Samples were collected by Lina Aleke Holthusen (Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg) during the Early-Career-Scientist Program hosted by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat with Julia Muchowski as PI.
