Oceanographic CTD data from the Ryder 2019 expedition

Christian Stranne, Johan Nilsson, Julia Muchowski, Julek Chawarski

Conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) data collected during the Ryder 2019 Expedition from coastal waters along northwestern Greenland, from Thule in the south to Sherard Osborn Fjord in the north.

More specifically, the CTD stations cover Nares Strait, southern Lincoln Sea, Sherard Osborn Fjord (where Ryder Glacier drains), and Petermann fjord (where Petermann Glacier drains).

These CTD data include high resolution (0.2 m) vertical profiles of the water column properties in terms of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and fluorescence over a total of 51 stations.

Data description

CTD data from Ryder 2019 expedition are organized in xlsx files (one for each station) and include the following parameters*:

  • pre = pressure (dbar)
  • tem (1/2) = concetrvative temperature (°C) for first/second sensor pack
  • sal (1/2) = absolute salinity (g/kg) derived from first/second sensor pack
  • rho (1/2) = in-situ density (kg/m³) derived from first/second sensor pack
  • pt (1/2) = potential temperature with reference to sea surface (°C) derived from first/second sensor pack
  • time = time in matlab datenum format (limited use due to missing decimals)
  • lon = longitude (decimal °E)
  • lat = latitude (decimal °N)
  • ox = oxygen concentration (µmol/kg)
  • oxSat = oxygen saturation (%)
  • svp = Sound Velocity (Chen-Millero, m/s)
  • fluor = Fluorescence, WET Labs ECO-AFL/FL (mg/m³)
  • turb = Turbidity, WET Labs ECO (NTU)
  • prho (1/2) = potential density with reference to the sea surface (kg/m³) derived from first/second sensor pack

*Note that there was a dual temperature/conductivity sensor pack installed on the CTD. Therefore, some parameters ends with 1 or 2 indicating the sensor pack number. Note also that all data are binned in 0.2 dbar bins.

The dataset includes a list (txt file) with station numbers, timepoints, latitude and longitude for all 51 CTD stations.

Comments

Data were collected with a Seabird 911 CTD. The CTD was equipped with a 24 Niskin bottle (12 liters) rosette and the following sensors: Dual SeaBird temperature (SBE 3), conductivity (SBE 04C), dissolved oxygen (SBE 43), turbidity and fluorescence (WET Labs ECO-AFL/FL) and a Benthos Altimeter PSA-916D. In situ conductivity and temperature have been converted to conservative temperature and absolute salinity using the TEOS-10 equation of state.

The Ryder expedition was carried out with Swedish icebreaker Oden starting/ending in US Air Force Base Thule, Northwest Greenland, Aug 5/Sept 10, 2019. It was multidisciplinary with a broad range of data collected. The main target was Sherard Osborn Fjord where Ryder Glaciers drains the north-western Greenland Ice Sheet. Included in the expedition survey areas were also Petermann Fjord and adjacent Hall Basin, northern Nares Strait and an area northeast of Ellesmere Island in the Lincoln Sea.

Project

Ryder 2019 Expedition: This was an Explorers Club Flag Expedition carrying Flag #51. The on board CTD program has been supported by the Swedish Research Council (VR) (grant no. 2018-04350).
