Research data support at the Bolin Centre

Access to large scale data resources

All members of the Bolin Centre working with climate modelling or large scale climate data analysis (HPC activities) can apply for membership in the Bolin Centre compute and storage projects and access to the supercomputer Tetralith.

Access to Tetralith requires membership in an active compute project, i.e. a project with compute time on Tetralith.

In addition to the compute project membership, users are recommended to apply for membership in a storage project for access to the NSC centre storage. Note that storage project membership alone is not enough to be granted access to Tetralith.

Membership application procedure

First time user

1. Create a SUPR account

Create a NAISS SUPR account. This is a user administration account for computing resources. N.B. If you already have a SUPR account you should not create a new one.

SUPR portal

2. Apply for membership in compute and storage projects

Before you receive a user account for Tetralith you have to become a member of an active compute project. Apply for membership through the SUPR portal. The project membership application procedure is outlined in more detail here.

3. Apply for computer access

Normally, an automatic user account request is sent for the computer which hosts the compute project pertaining to the membership request. You should receive an email from NSC with instructions for how to activate your account.

If you have not received log-in credentials via email within a day you can manually apply for access to Tetralith through the SUPR portal. Go to “Accounts” in the menu to the left after logging in to the SUPR portal.

4. Sign user agreement

To use the NSC facilities you need to sign the user agreement. You can sign the user agreement online through SUPR if you have a Swedish university account (email address). If not, you will have to send a signed copy of the user agreement by mail to the NAISS administration.

Project membership application

Apply for membership in the Bolin Centre project through the SUPR portal. You will have to actively apply for membership, no members will be added automatically.

For information about active project numbers, please contact Anna Lewinschal.

Please read the instructions carefully before applying

If your membership application fails to comply with the instructions below, we will deny your membership request. You can then reapply with an amended information specification.

Compute project

When applying for membership in this project, please write in the “message to the PI” box that you are aware of the mandatory NAISS acknowledgement policy:

"The computations/data handling/[SIMILAR] were/was enabled by resources provided by the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS) at [NAISS AFFILIATED SITE] partially funded by the Swedish Research Council through grant agreement no. 2022-06725."

Storage project

When applying for membership in this project, please fill in the following information in the “message to the PI” box:

  • That you are aware of the policies regarding data storage in this project outlined below.
  • That you are aware of the mandatory NAISS acknowledgement policy for publications derived from the use of this resource.
  • Your department and position.
  • How long you intend to use the project.
  • Secondary contact for your data (e.g. supervisor, PI for project, student etc.)

Storage policy

When you join the project you have to declare that you understand the user conditions.

  • You will have to renew your membership on a yearly basis. If you do not actively join the project, your data will be removed. I.e. data owned by a user that is no longer a member of the storage project will be removed.
  • The storage project is intended for members of the Bolin Centre. If you change affiliation you will have to either:
    • Remove your data from the Bolin Centre storage project.
    • Change the ownership of the data to an active user within the Bolin Centre.
    • Provide a timeline for when the data can be removed.
  • You have to have a valid email address registered in SUPR. This is the email we will use to contact you regarding your data stored in the storage project. If you fail to reply when contacted, we will remove you from the project. If you do not reapply to become a member of the project, we will delete your data.
  • You will have to report your usage when requested for continued storage project access.

NAISS should be acknowledged as follows:

"The computations/data handling/[SIMILAR] were/was enabled by resources provided by the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS) at [NAISS AFFILIATED SITE] partially funded by the Swedish Research Council through grant agreement no. 2022-06725."
