Ice thickness and bed topography for Storglaciären, northern Sweden

Zhuo Wang, Neil Ross, Thomas Frank, Jamie Barnett, Ilaria Santin, Martin Houssais, Johanna Dahlkvist, Nina Kirchner

Newer versions of this dataset are available

The dataset is based on a radio-echo sounding (RES) survey conducted in March – April 2024 on Storglaciären, northern Sweden, along with subsequent data analysis. It contains:

I. Point values of RES-measured ice thickness.

II. Glacier-wide gridded ice-thickness and corresponding uncertainty, derived by combining RES-measured ice thickness and ice-thickness modelling.

III. Glacier-wide gridded bed topography and filtered bed topography, obtained by subtracting gridded ice-thickness from gridded surface elevation.

Storglaciären is one of Sweden’s four so-called reference glaciers (glaciers for which more than 30 years of continuous measurements are available) included in the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) database. The surface mass balance series for Storglaciären is also the World’s longest detailed one.

Data description

This dataset consists of one csv file and four tif files (GeoTIFF).

TTT_SG.csv Point values of RES-measured ice thickness

Table containing nine columns:

  1. GLACIER_NAME glacier name
  2. SURVEY_DATE survey date (YYYY-MM-DD)
  3. PROFILE_NAME RES profile identifier
  4. POINT_ID RES point identifier
  5. POINT_LAT latitude of each RES point (decimal degree)
  6. POINT_LON longitude of each RES point (decimal degree)
  7. ELEVATION calibrated surface elevation (m above sea level)
  8. THICKNESS ice thickness (m)
  9. UNCERTAINTY corresponding ice-thickness uncertainty (m)

The surface elevation used is taken from the Arctic DEM strip (Porter 2022) acquired in October 2024.

SGIT.tif Gridded ice-thickness

Glacier-wide gridded ice-thickness (m) for Storglaciären with a spatial resolution of 10 m x 10 m. The coordinate reference system (CRS) used is SWEREF99 TM (EPSG:3006).

SGIT_Uncertainty.tif Ice-thickness uncertainty

Corresponding glacier-wide ice-thickness uncertainty for Storglaciären with a spatial resolution of 10 m x 10 m. The coordinate reference system (CRS) used is SWEREF99 TM (EPSG:3006).

SGBED.tif Gridded bed elevation

Glacier-wide gridded bed elevation for Storglaciären with a spatial resolution of 10 m x 10 m. The map is provided in the SWEREF99 TM coordinate reference system (EPSG:3006) and is calibrated to the geoid using the SWEN17_RH2000 model.

SGBED_Filtered.tif Smoothed bed elevation

Corresponding smoothed bed elevation for Storglaciären, obtained using a Gaussian filter with a spatial smoothing scale of approximately 60 m. The map has a spatial resolution of 10 m × 10 m, is provided in the SWEREF99 TM coordinate reference system (EPSG:3006), and is calibrated to the geoid using the SWEN17_RH2000 model.
