The Master’s programme in Climate Science is by its nature cross-disciplinary. It emphasizes the breadth of climate science, providing an overview of climate and environmental change on a range of spatial and temporal scales. You will gain knowledge about the physical and chemical processes that govern Earth’s climate on both short and long timescales, and you will be exposed to state-of-the-art knowledge that is of direct relevance to society. The programme aims to give insight and understanding about climate change, its consequences for ecosystems and society, as well as mitigation efforts. You will gain an excellent foundation for a future career either related to climate and environment issues in governmental and other organizations, as well as research and teaching at universities.

Application procedure

Note that this program is only open for applications during the early international round with a deadline in January.
Interested applicants should submit their academic record through the university admission system according to the usual procedure. As mentioned in the evaluation criteria, applicants are also ranked according to their motivation letter and research ideas. In that regard it is important to submit a document containing to following sections.

  • Motivation: Describe why you are interested in following our program (maximum 100 words)
  • Research ideas: Describe any research ideas that you many want to explore during the program (maximum 100 words)
  • Requirements: Please state briefly how you fulfil the requirements for English and mathematics. If you do not have 15 higher education credits in pure or applied mathematics, which other courses would you like us to consider as equivalent quantitative courses (e.g., statistics or physics)

There are four obligatory courses that make up 60 HP of the total of 120 HP. Students may then choose between a 30 HP project and 30 HP elective courses or 45 HP project and 15 HP elective courses to make up the other 60 HP.

Note that these may vary from year to year and students may only take the courses for which they fulfill the specific prerequisites. Also, students may take up to 15 credits from undergraduate level, or other climate relevant advance level courses, with permission of the study director.

Prerequisites and special admittance requirements

To be admitted to the programme, knowledge equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, Geoscience, Geology, Physical Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Environmental Science or Biogeoscience is required, including at least 15 higher education credits in mathematics. Also required is knowledge equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B or equivalent to one of the following tests; Cambridge CPE and CAE: Pass, IELTS: 6.0 (with no part of the test below 5.0), TOEFL (paper based): 550 (with minimum grade 4 on the written test part), TOEFL (computer based): 213, TOEFL (internet based): 79.
