Data from expedition ASCOS, Arctic Ocean, 2008

The ASCOS (Arctic Summer Cloud Ocean Study) expedition was carried out during summer 2008 in high-latitude areas in the Arctic Ocean.

With the Swedish icebreaker Oden serving as the research platform, a range of scientific investigations were made. The main target was to study the formation and life cycle of low-altitude Arctic clouds in the central Arctic. The expedition was interdisciplinary and covered observations of the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere and the upper ocean, meteorology, cloud microphysics and aerosols and upper-ocean biogeochemistry. High-resolution bathymetry is also available.

The expedition started and ended in Longyearbyen on Svalbard, Norway, and lasted from Augst 1 to September 9, 2008.

Comments

The expedition took place during the International Polar Year (IPY) 2008. ASCOS was likely the largest single Arctic Ocean atmospheric effort during the IPY and was endorsed under the AICI-IPY umbrella under SOLAS.
