Data from expedition ARTofMELT, Arctic Ocean, 2023
Michael Tjernström, Paul Zieger, ARTofMELT 2023 Scientific Party
The ARTofMELT expedition was carried out in the Fram Strait pack ice during the spring transition (May to June) of 2023, with the Swedish icebreaker Oden serving as research platform.
ARTofMELT targeted the Arctic at the onset of the annual sea-ice melt. Most research expeditions to the Arctic Ocean focus on late summer or early autumn, when the summer melt has generated easier conditions to navigate in the ice. As a consequence, there are almost no observations on the initiation of melt in spring. While targeting this difficult period, ARTofMELT also explored the hypothesis that episodic inflow of warm and moist air from south, so-called "atmospheric rivers", may trigger the melt onset.
The ARTofMELT field phase collected interdisciplinary observations and samples across a column from ~500 meters into the ocean, through ice and snow and up through the atmosphere, using both in situ and remote sensing instruments.
The expedition deployed from Svalbard in late winter on 8 May and captured the onset of the surface melt on 10 June before returning to Svalbard on 15 June, 2023.
